Several hours later, Torleif called for a rest. Both men were dirty and bloodied, but in good spirits. They sat down on an old mossy log, breathing heavily.

Torleif retrieved a flask of water from his pack and drank deeply. He then poured water into his cupped hand and offered it to Chubbers, who greedily lapped it up.

Toke brought out his bottle of foul smelling mead and drank, half of it dribbling down his ratty beard. “Ah, that's the good!” he said, with a wide smile on his scarred face.

After ten minutes, Torleif got to his feet. “We better go,” he told Toke. “I don't know if they're still following us, but it's best if we don't push our luck.”

With a nod, Toke got to his feet and they started down the trail once again. They walked at a brisk pace, but not too fast. They were conserving energy in case they ran into any more trouble.

Humming an unintelligible tune that was full of grunts and snorts, Toke seemed to be having a pretty good time, despite the chaos of what just happened. The simple mountain man was happy to be on another adventure, no questions asked...until now.

“Are ve going some ver, Torleif?”

Torleif nodded. He knew exactly where they were going. “We're going up north, to Olav's village.”

“But dat is ver you ver a slave, yes?”

“That is true. Olav unjustly had me enslaved for six months. I figure that since we are going in this direction, we could pay him a visit.”

“Oh, ya. That is good.”

Torleif furrowed his brow as he glanced at the big man. It seemed that Toke didn't understand what he was hinting at. “Olav took away six months of my life. I figure it is only fair that I kill six of his men – one for each month that he took away from me. I already killed one man by the name of Dagr. That leaves five more men to kill.”

Toke shrugged his shoulders and started humming again.

Torleif wasn't getting through to him, it seemed. “Toke, do you understand what I'm saying? I want you to help me kill five men.”

The big man stopped humming for a brief moment to reply, “Is good.” He then continued on with his primitive tune of grunts and snorts.

Shaking his head, Torleif thought, well that was easy. He then looked at Chubbers. The cub was happily loping along, with his tongue hanging out of his furry snout. It appeared that his two companions were oblivious to the mayhem they just left behind, and they were oblivious to the mayhem that was to come. They were animals, living their life in the moment. Must be nice, Torleif mused.

Torleif's two companions had much in common. Both had fur covering most of their body, both communicated in a series of grunts and snorts, and both smelled like animals.

And both were killers.

The wilderness around him looked familiar. They were already on the trail that Torleif walked on not two months ago, when he was returning from his enslavement (of course, going in the opposite direction).
